Transition volumes from multiply twinned particles to single crystals of supported Ag and Au nanoparticles

چکیده

Shape changes of Ag and Au nanoparticles supported on single crystal reconstructed SrTiO3(001) (111) substrates were investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy. Both metals nucleate as multiply twinned particles (MTPs) transform into face-centered-cubic crystals (SCs) beyond a critical volume. On SrTiO3(001)-c(4 × 2) the volumes are measured 141 ± 51 nm3 for 107 23 Au, whereas SrTiO3(111)–(4 4)+(6 6) 53 26 40 Au. A much larger transition volume was observed SrTiO3(001)–(2 1), where remains MTPs up to 3400 nm3, while nucleates atomic monolayers instead MTPs. This work demonstrates significant impact small variations surface structure substrate MTP–SC

Surface structure and energetics of multiply twinned particles

Experimental results from thermally annealed particles of silver and gold in the size range 10-50 nm show the presence of re-entrant surfaces on the decahedral multiply twinned particles (MTPs). A theoretical model is developed to explain these results based on the Wulff construction modified to include twin-boundaries. In addition to reproducing the re-entrant surfaces, the theory suggests tha...

Thermodynamic Analysis of Multiply Twinned Particles: Surface Stress Effects

In nanoparticle technologies, such as SERS, fuel cell catalysis and data storage, icosahedral and decahedral nanoparticles, owing to their defect structure, provide higher functionality than their single-crystal Wulff counterparts. However, precise control on the yield of multiply twinned structures during solution synthesis has been challenging. In particular, it is difficult to synthesize ico...

Mechanistic studies on the galvanic replacement reaction between multiply twinned particles of Ag and HAuCl4 in an organic medium.

This article presents a mechanistic study on the galvanic replacement reaction between 11- and 14-nm multiply twinned particles (MTPs) of Ag and HAuCl4 in chloroform. We monitored both morphological and spectral changes as the molar ratio of HAuCl4 to Ag was increased. The details of reaction were different from previous observations on single-crystal Ag nanocubes and cuboctahedrons. Because Au...

HIGH RESOLUTION STUDIES OF SMALL PARTICLES OF GOLD AND SILVER I. Multiply-twinned particles

The structure of multiply-twinned particles of gold and silver found in the early stages ofparticulate growth has been studied using direct lattice imaging methods with the Cambridge University 600 kV high resolution electron microscope. There was widespread evidence for the presence of strain-relieving partial dislocations in icosahedral particles. However, the possibility of imaging artefacts...

Selective Decoration of Au Nanoparticles on Monolayer MoS2 Single Crystals

We report a controllable wet method for effective decoration of 2-dimensional (2D) molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) layers with Au nanoparticles (NPs). Au NPs can be selectively formed on the edge sites or defective sites of MoS2 layers. The Au-MoS2 nano-composites are formed by non-covalent bond. The size distribution, morphology and density of the metal nanoparticles can be tuned by changing the d...
